Downstream History

In early 1970 a new addition arrived - Downstream Keepers Girl at Chadwell. Her sire was CH Bordercot Stolford Doonigan and her dam was Charmain of Roysia who was a sister to our Downstream Charm of Roysia (Ch Waveman x Downstream Medea). She was bred by Jackie Burton and it was thanks to Rosalie that we had her as she wanted some of Doonigan's stock to go into working homes. Emma as she was known was a lovely bitch - she won well in the ring and had numerous Field Trial awards. Sadly, although we tried many times she never produced puppies. A great disappointment to my parents.

In 1971 the Downstream kennel was to move again. Peter's boss Lord Hampden died and the shoot was disbanded. In the spring we moved to Shardelows Farm, Cowlinge - near Newmarket where we were to remain for the next 25 years.

Another additon around the same time was a Woodway daughter - Nodnetter Lametta. She was a daughter of Downstream Charm of Roysia who was sold to Mrs Lawrence-Jones. Mrs L-J (as she was always known) subsequently bred from her and a bitch puppy came back to us as a stud fee. Lucy was a very sweet natured bitch who although didn't shine in competition was an excellent picking up dog for Peter. She also proved difficult to get in whelp and only ever produced one bitch puppy - however that one bitch was Downstream Little Locket - known as Lilly. Shirley and Peter probably maintain that she was one of the best that they ever bred, although Peter would probably admit that he and she were not always the best of friends. As a singleton puppy she missed out on a puppyhood and therefore was integrated with the older dogs earlier than most puppies. As a result she thought she knew everything. Negotiation was not a word in her vocabulary! Shirley showed her and she won her first CC at 17 months old at the now defunct Leicester City Ch Show under Tony Pascoe. Lilly had one very great admirer - Gunnel Whalstrom from the Gunhills kennel in Sweden. Gunnel begged and begged my parents to sell her but the answer was always "no"! However, she was promised a bitch puppy from her first litter.

Lilly was duly mated to Downstream Perry - a Wizardwood Peregrine son out of Downstream Robina. She produced 5 puppies. It was at this point that Peter finally lost patience with her as she was the most terrible mother - she would pick the puppies up and hide them all round the house, she would not feed them nor would she stay with them. So when Gunnel rang to enquire if there was a bitch puppy for her Peter told her "No. I have decided you can have Lilly and I will keep a bitch puppy". Gunnel was delighted and later in 1977 Lilly left UK shores for Sweden where she was a resounding success - producing another 2 litters for Gunnel and becoming an International Champion.

Downstream Robina had 2 litters of puppies - the first by Claverdon Fulmer from which we kept Downstream Kerry. Interestingly Downstream Kite was sold to Graham and Anne Lambert! Another sister Downstream Kittiwake went to Ann Lee who won a field trial with her. Her second litter only yielded one puppy - Downstream Peregrine.

Downstream Charm of Roysia produced her last litter in 1973 to Colin Wells' Kenstaff Whipster. We retained Downstream Fiddler and Downstream Forrester went to Denmark where he gained his title.

Downstream Kerry produced 2 litters by Fenrivers Nupher. Read Flowers had Downstream Nimble back as a stud fee. Nimble went on to do very well in Field Trials and prove to be an influential sire of working dogs. He also won a couple of RCCs in the ring.

Kerry's second litter by Nupher produced Downstream Thomasina amongst others who was to go to David and Molly James (Birdcage affix).

The bitch we kept from Lilly was Downstream Jade. She was mated to Ch Falswift Apparition. From the resulting litter we kept Downstream Vagabond (Luke) and Martin and Betty Roe (Roglans) had Downstream Vespers.

Ch Woodway was used very successfully at stud. Often Peter would take a bitch back rather than a stud fee. One of the most memorable was Victoria of Downstream whose dam was Fenrivers Kerria - bred by Read Flowers.

Sadly in early 1974 we were to lose Sam at the age of 6 years to torsion. He was Peter's favourite dog.

In 1975 Peter judged at Championship Show level for the first time - at the United Retriever Club Championship Show.
